Johanna Parry är en ödmjuk och anspråkslös kvinna som arbetar som barnflicka. That may not even be true (Munro fans must weigh in with book vs. movie comparisons), but it feels stilted by its own dramatic tiptoeing. Slow-moving drama has some sex, drinking, language. Johanna is an simple care-giver who has always taken care of people.

And while there is much to admire in the performances, the movieís measured pace withholds the best parts for a frustratingly long time. When Johanna redecorates Ken’s place, it is meant to serve as a metaphor for how she is remodeling their lives. Not a damning criticism, by any means, simply the way it resonated with me. She is one of my MRE authors and this is the first story in this collection.

For as much a hermit as Johanna is, she wastes no time in absconding from the McCauley residence to pursue a life with Ken. Unfortunately, her transition is not quite as smooth or effortless as Forte’s, though the uninspiring material doesn’t do her any favors. For most of its length, in fact, the film seems to boil beneath its quiet surface like a Munro tale, and indeed like Joanna herself. Wiig carries this apparently. Kristen Wiig, on the other hand — no problem. With each new perspective we learn more about events and characters and are often surprised by twists and turns, as well as the randomness of fate.

She’s going to be doing something very different – keeping house and caring for a teenager who lives with her grandfather. This is not to say that Wiig is a one-trick point or that comedy is the bridesmaid to drama’s bride. She can watch, and listen and be interesting.
