The symptoms for this particular problem can be recognised by the dash steering light coming on, but the ignition lights are not illuminate or the steering column lock won’t release. Instrument panel message center began displaying steering column lock defective, with illumination of a warning lamp, and would immediately shut down engine upon initial start-up (or on occasion, would not allow vehicle to even be started). Vehicle was stationary at all times. After he scanned with VCDS and erased faults the car would start fine, until the next time! After googling i can confirm it is the steering lock issue.

Just got my car out of the shop for this very problem and not at all happy! T and the warranty just expired but I had an extended warranty which had a section covering steering but they claim not the steering column which I am fighting. Have reported this to VW dealer multiple times during service maintenance. Always told that no code pops, and no recall has been issued. Average repair cost is $6at 130miles.
