Got in my Passat as usual for my journey into the office and upon starting the engine it cut out after about seconds. This was the first time it has appeared. I took the fob out and restarted the engine and it was fine - all clear. Instrument panel message center began displaying steering column lock defective , with illumination of a warning lamp, and would immediately shut down engine upon initial start-up (or on occasion, would not allow vehicle to even be started).

Vehicle was stationary at all times. Steering column lock device failed. Normally at VW you would need to replace the steering column lock and the comfort control module but we can do it with only replacing the lock and programming the module, saving a lot of money!

After several attempts it finally started. A day or so later, I got the steering wheeling lock defective warning. When I got to my destination, I called my dealer and inquired about the problem, at this point the light was out.
